Frequently Asked Questions

01
The standard wine bottle holds 750ml, with formats ranging from 187ml splits up to 1.5L magnums and larger. Sake follows traditional Japanese measurements, most commonly the 720ml (four-gō) and the 1.8L isshobin, with 300ml formats popular for gifting. Evergreen manufactures wine and sake bottles from 187ml up to 5L.
02
Wine bottles come in four main shapes, each associated with a wine region and style. Bordeaux bottles have high shoulders and straight sides, Burgundy bottles are wider with sloping shoulders, Alsace bottles are tall and slender for aromatic whites, and Champagne bottles are heavier with a deep punt to hold internal pressure. The shape signals a wine's origin and style more than it affects flavor.
03
Wine bottle color affects how well the glass shields the wine from light. Amber glass blocks the most UV light, green glass offers moderate protection, and clear (flint) glass offers the least — which is why age-worthy reds tend to use darker glass while whites and rosés meant for early drinking often use clear. Color is also driven by regional tradition and shelf appeal.
04
The punt is the inward dimple at the base of a wine bottle. It originated with hand-blown glassmaking, where indenting the base produced a stable, flat-standing bottle, and it adds structural strength that helps sparkling-wine bottles withstand internal pressure. On modern still-wine bottles the punt is largely traditional, though it can still aid stacking, pouring, and stability.
05
Sake and wine bottles differ mainly in sizing conventions and closures. Sake follows traditional Japanese volumes — most often 720ml or the 1.8L isshobin — and usually uses a screw cap or crown closure rather than cork, since most sake is meant to be enjoyed young rather than aged. Both are commonly made in green, amber, or clear glass based on light-protection needs.
06
Wine and sake bottles use several closure types depending on the product and how long it will be stored. Corks and bar-top corks remain standard for age-worthy wines and premium sake, while screw caps, ROPP (roll-on) caps, and crown closures suit products meant to be enjoyed young. Evergreen offers cork, bar top, ROPP, crown, screw cap, and pry/cork combos, with standard GPI, DIN, or custom neck finishes to match.
07
Yes — wine and sake bottles can be customized through glass color, embossing, custom shapes, and surface decoration. Structural features like an embossed logo or a custom shape are formed in the mold and add no per-unit cost once tooling is built, whereas custom glass colors require a dedicated furnace run or a spray color coating. Evergreen offers flint, green, amber, and cobalt blue glass, plus decoration such as frosting, color spray, silkscreen, PS/ACL decals, heat transfer, and electroplating.
08
Wine and sake bottles are tested for quality through dimensional and capacity checks, wall-thickness and weight verification, and inspection for glass defects such as stones, bubbles, and surface cracks. Bottles are also checked for thermal shock and impact resistance to confirm they survive filling, transport, and handling. At Evergreen, QC engineers are onsite at every production, applying strict in-process inspections so defects are caught before shipment rather than after delivery.
