Water Transfer

Water transfer is a surface decoration method that transfers printed patterns or graphics onto a product by immersing it in water with a floating ink layer. This technique enables the direct application of seamless, full-coverage images, complex textures, or photo-realistic artwork onto products. Water transfer elevates visual impact, allows for intricate and continuous designs over irregular shapes, and offers broad design versatility for both high-end and customized packaging.

Process

Water transfer follows a structured, multi-step process to apply seamless, full-coverage decorative graphics that elevate product appeal and brand differentiation. Each stage is crucial for achieving precise pattern placement, adhesion, and long-term durability.

Design Preparation

The process begins with creating or selecting high-resolution artwork optimized for water transfer. Designs may include photo-realistic images, intricate patterns, or custom textures such as wood grain or bamboo. Color separations and graphic alignment are carefully managed to suit 3D surface wrapping and registration.

Surface Preparation

Packaging items (e.g., bottles, jars, caps) are cleaned and pre-treated to ensure optimal adhesion. Depending on the substrate, primers or surface activators may be applied to promote ink bonding and durability.

Activation

A chemical activator is evenly sprayed over the film, dissolving the PVA carrier and turning the printed ink into a floating, flexible layer ready for transfer.

Rinsing and Drying

After dipping, excess residue is rinsed away, and the item is thoroughly dried. This step ensures that only the intended graphic remains adhered to the surface.

Quality Control

Each item undergoes inspection for pattern alignment, coverage consistency, surface smoothness, and resistance to abrasion or chemicals. Only products meeting quality standards proceed to final packaging.

By following these steps, water transfer printing produces vibrant, durable, and highly detailed decorations that wrap seamlessly around complex shapes, making it ideal for premium, custom, and visually striking packaging solutions.

Film Printing

The artwork is printed onto a specialized, water-soluble PVA film using gravure or digital printing. This film holds the design and is manufactured to dissolve upon contact with water, leaving only the ink pattern intact.

Film Placement

The printed film is carefully floated on the surface of a temperature-controlled water tank. The film must remain flat, wrinkle-free, and properly aligned with the intended dipping direction.

Dipping Process

The product is slowly and evenly dipped through the floating ink layer. Water pressure and surface tension wrap the ink pattern around every contour, creating a seamless, all-around coverage.

Topcoat Application

A protective topcoat (clear varnish or lacquer) is applied to seal the design, enhance durability, and add gloss or matte effects as required by the project specifications.

Applications

Water transfer printing is widely used in personal care, home care, food and beverage packaging for its ability to achieve intricate, full coverage designs that maximize product differentiation and shelf appeal.
