Lithographic Printing
Lithographic printing, commonly called “litho”, is a high-resolution decoration process used to apply detailed, full-color designs onto flat or cylindrical packaging surfaces. It supports CMYK process colors and spot colors, allowing for complex graphics and branding elements. Lithographic printing is typically used in offset setups and is ideal for high-volume runs where photographic image quality, color accuracy, and fine text reproduction are essential.
Advantages

High-Definition Image
Produces exceptionally sharp text, intricate details, and vibrant images with consistent tone and contrast.

Excellent Color Reproduction
Supports full CMYK process and spot colors, enabling precise color matching, smooth gradients, and photographic effects.

Cost Efficiency at Scale
High-speed output and efficiency offset setup costs, making it economical for medium to large batch production.

Customizable Surface Options
Offers a range of finish options, including glossy and matte, to enhance tactile appeal and match brand aesthetics.
Process
Lithographic printing on metal packaging follows a structured, high-precision process that delivers vibrant, high-resolution graphics with strong durability. Each stage is critical in achieving consistent color, sharp imagery, and long-lasting surface protection for cans and decorative metal containers.

Design Preparation
The process begins with creating a high-resolution digital artwork, including CMYK and spot color separations. Design adjustments are made to accommodate ink behavior on metal, and a white base layer is often planned beneath the main graphics to ensure color vibrancy and consistency across reflective or metallic substrates.

Metal Sheet Preparation
Tinplate or aluminum sheets are cleaned and coated to ensure a contaminant-free surface for optimal ink adhesion. Sheets are precisely sized and stacked to align with the lithographic press's feeding system.

Multi-Color Lithographic Printing
Using an indirect offset process, each inked image is transferred from the plate to the metal sheet. CMYK colors and any spot colors are applied in succession, building up to the final design with precise registration and even ink coverage.

Curing and Drying
Printed and coated metal sheets are conveyed through high temperature curing ovens or UV systems to fully dry the ink and harden the protective coating. This ensures the print remains smudge-proof and securely bonded to the metal surface.

Plate Making
Each color separation is transferred to a flat printing plate using computer-to-plate (CTP) imaging. The plates are treated to attract ink in image areas and repel it in non-image areas using dampening solutions. Separate plates are created for each color and the white base.

White Base Coat Printing
A white ink base layer is first printed onto the metal sheets. This step is essential for enhancing ink opacity and ensuring accurate color reproduction, especially on silver-toned or dark metal surfaces where inks alone may appear muted or transparent.

Protective Coating Application
After printing, a clear glossy or matte oil-based coating is applied to seal the design. This protective varnish enhances surface sheen, prevents scratches during forming and handling, and creates a moisture barrier to protect against corrosion and rust.

Post-Processing and Quality Control
Each sheet undergoes visual inspection and sensor-based checks for color accuracy, coating uniformity, and surface integrity. Sheets that meet quality standards are trimmed or stamped into can bodies, lids, or other packaging components.
By following these steps, lithographic printing achieves premium, full-color decoration with industrial-grade durability – ideal for aerosol cans, food cans, chemical cans, cosmetic tins, and specialty metal packaging where both visual appeal and product protection are essential.
Applications
Lithographic printing is widely used in industrial chemicals, food & beverage, personal care, and home care packaging for its ability to deliver high-resolution, full-color graphics that elevate visual appeal and reinforce brand identity.
